A coffee-coloured butterfly with two rows of white spots along the margins of both wings, those of the inner row being larger. Both sides of the wings are similar and the body is black with white spots. Often, tufts of yellow hairs called hair-pencils can be seen protruding from the tip of the abdomen of the male butterfly.
Behaviour
These fairly large butterflies are very common in Chennai and can be seen flying rather weakly about or resting with wings open or closed. The larvae feed largely on leaves of various species of Figs as well as Orleander, Indian rubber tree and others. They are found all over the country in the plains and upto nearly 2500 mts in the hills. They are migratory and sometimes congregrate to rest in clusters.
