A medium-sized, chocolate-brown butterfly with a large central dark patch across both wings with alternating pale and dark bordering (Pic. 1). The standard trademarks of all pansies, the ocelli, or spots are present in orange with black centres on the hindwing. The underside (Pic. 2) is also brown with broad dark patches, some white spots and indistinct ocelli.
Behaviour
These energetic butterflies with are fairly commonly seen in Chennai, sometimes actively chasing other butterflies or resting with the wings opened flat. They favour shaded areas and are more common at higher altitudes where there is more rainfall. Strobilanthus plants are favoured food plants.
They are found all over the country upto 3000 mts in the Himalayas.
